If all goes as planned, Aladdin's Magic Carpet will be replaced by a drone.

Walt Disney World is mulling the idea of bringing drones into its theme parks as a way to carry "large puppet-like characters and projection screens during nighttime shows," reports the Orange County Register.  Last week, three <air quotes> Disney Imagineers </air quotes> filed patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that outlined their plans of what they would do with the flying robots.

According to the patents, the future of Disneyland shows consist of nightmare fuel. One of their ideas is to attach humungous balloons to the drones for whatever reason, or use them to make it look like they were controlling the arms and legs of large puppets. Another patent said the drones would be used in the more practical manner of lugging around flexible projection screens.

Lastly, the park's signature fireworks show might be on the way out, the newspaper notes:

The third patent would allow the drones to carry a light system that would display images onto screens or the sky with the use of floating pixels, or “flixels,” that the application hinted could replace Disney’s long-held tradition of shooting fireworks.

A Disneyland Resort spokesperson declined the newspaper's request for comment.
